British Jewellers Association Award 2014
“Eight charms by leading British jewellers united on one bracelet in aid of Breast Cancer Care”
In an initiative spearheaded by the British Jewellers’ Association (BJA) which saw a collaboration with six renowned British Designer Jewellers, each of whom have designed a unique charm for a bracelet that was auctioned at International Jewellery London (IJL) Trade Show 2014 in aid of Breast Cancer Care UK. The two winners of a design competition organised by the British Jewellery Association, also contributed their charms, bringing the total number to eight.
This is my winning design…named ‘The Spirit Within’ along with my design concept.
Within the breast cavity lies the heart, a symbol of love and life.
This iconic shape, which is used 3 times within the charm, is interlinked to create a unifying form, that of mind, body and soul thus representing the person. The pink tourmaline bead is symbolic of the bravery and the fighting spirit within.
The charm has soft curved lines and with the use of mill grain beading, it’s “prettiness” enhances the fact that femininity is forever present.

Explanation behind the design
I wanted to create a piece that would always remind those who have and still are enduring the hardship of cancer, that within ourselves we a have a spirit that is strong and brave.
Some of those experiencing breast cancer have the difficult decision of having to undergo a mastectomy and how the after effects of such a procedure can affect their sense of femininity and self confidence. It was important to show with this charm that beauty lies within and femininity is never lost to those whom experience breast cancer.
Although I have chosen a pink Tourmaline for this charm, a person’s fighting spirit may be represented in a different colour or gemstone. As every person is an individual, their favoured choice of bead, which they feel best represents themselves can be placed within the charm.
The meaning of a Pink Tourmaline gemstone
Pink Tourmaline is a gentle stone that directly touches the heart. The colour varies widely from pale pink to deep red. Relaxing and nurturing, pink Tourmaline is associated with feminine energies. It vibrates a deep resonance with the heart chakra. It has the potential to heal emotional wounds with its soft, soothing energy to bring feelings of comfort and safety
